Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated by the William Anders historic and unprecedented portrait of Earth, December 24, 1968.
It was the fourth trip around the moon, but this orbit presented Lunar Module Pilot William Anders with a view of planet Earth never viewed by another human being. Frank Borman and James Lovell, Jr. scrambled to get color film to Anders to capture “Earthrise rising above the desolate surface of the moon.”
“Earthrise” is illustrated here as it was seen from inside Apollo 8. Thank you, Apollo 8 astronauts, for a reminder of the beauty and fragility of this shared planet.
