New Moon
Alison M. Laurence
Auckland, New Zealand
Artist Statement
The new moon, the first visible crescent of the moon in the night sky, is said to signify new beginnings. Its pure romance is all too evident in the many songs and poems penned over the centuries.
The new moon is shown here above city of Auckland, New Zealand, featuring the iconic island of Rangitoto, the Harbour Bridge, the Sky Tower and the Auckland Museum.
Also on show is the Evening Star – Venus – bright in the sky. The Southern Cross, four stars in a diamond shape, is significant to New Zealanders as it appears on our country’s flag and together with the Moon helped sailors navigate their way to our shores.
Techniques
Raw edge applique, machine quilting.

Cotton fabrics, wool batting.
