Houston, We have a Myth by Debby Walters

Houston, We have a Myth

Debby Walters and Kim Buchmann

Montgomery, Texas, USA

Artist Statement

My daughter, Kim Buchmann, and I thoroughly enjoyed the collaboration making this quilt.

Being from Houston we have always felt a close connection to the Space Program. In addition we have embraced the belief that Houston was the first word spoken from the moon.

Research quickly demonstrated there is controversy about what the first words from the moon really were. Buzz Aldrin said “contact light” and Neil Armstrong said, “shutdown.” Whatever the word and whoever said it, the NASA team in Houston guided them, thus our beautiful Houston skyline. We choose to perpetuate the myth – “Houston, Tranquility Base, the Eagle has landed.”

Techniques

Applique, trapunto, discharge, free motion quilting.
